13. StandardsA number of standards exist for chain drives and for lifting chains also. Chains developed from the early British designs have been compiled as BS 228 and this is widely used in many countries. In the USA chain manufacturers comply with American Standard B.29.1. Unfortunately, the two standards are not interchangeable and so ISO have combined both Standards into the one recommendation (R606) and this lists sizes of both British and American types. In addition, Germans have a DIN standard (8187/8) for metric sizes.
The following list covers Standards for transmission and conveyor roller chains:
BS 228: 1984 Short Pitch Transmission Precision Roller Chains and Chain Wheels ISO 606: 1982
BS 4687 : 1984 Extended Pitch Precision Roller Chains and Chain Wheels ISO 1275: 1984
BS 6592 : 1985 Drive Sprocket Assemblies for Chain Conveyors for Mining ISO 5613: 1984
BS 2947 1985 Steel Roller Chains, Attachments and Chain Wheels for Agricultural and Similar Machinery ISO 487: 1984
BS 2969 1980 High Tensile Steel Chains for Chain Conveyors and Coal Ploughs ISO 610: 1979
BS 5801 : 1979 Flat Top Chains and Associated Chain Wheels for Conveyors ISO 4348: 1978
