5.4 Torque limiting clutches
A torque limiting clutch has a limit set to the amount of torque that it can transmit due to some construct within it. Torque may also be limited by a controlling device on the actuation machinery. Several types of clutch can be used to limit the torque transmitted.

Friction clutch - controling the actuation (normal) force will control the maximum torque transmitted. Care must be taken with heat generated by the slipping friction surfaces.

Electromagnetic and powder clutches - see Other types of clutch

Ball and Detente clutches.

Almost no torque is transmitted once the limit is reached. At the limit spring loaded balls are forced out of the detentes. It will reset once the torque drops.
