2.5 Fitting and geometry
The conditions recommended for correct fitting of bearings must be observed if quoted performance is to be realised. Careful assembly on to correctly prepared surfaces with recommended tolerances and surface finish are necessary. Equally the bearing must be supplied with the correct type and quantity of lubricant to reduce friction and to remove heat generated and debris caused by wear. The lubricant should be contained by a suitable seal.

Bearing dimensions are normally given in manufacturers' catalogues together with recommendations on fits between inner ring/shaft and outer ring/ housing.

For a given bearing type, a single housing diameter will be suitable for a range of shaft sizes, each bearing having given dimensions and load rating. Similarly for a given shaft diameter a range of housing diameters will give different dimensions and capacities. The recommended fit between machine parts and bearing rings will depend on which ring is rotating, on the material of the machine parts and on the nature of the loading.
