2.4 Specify the operating factors
Factors relating to operation include the ease of fitting and dismantling the seal. Conditions required for fitting may be difficult if replacement is necessary 'on-site' and special tools may be required. Many seals are fitted for life and maintenance is not anticipated but some of the more complex types need maintenance, so accessibility in service is more important.

Geometrical factors have a crucial effect on seal performance. Particularly the surface finish and tolerances which must be applied to the sealing surfaces will affect the detail design of the product. Of a more general nature are the orientation of the seal face and the space available for the seal unit. Often this is limited, in which case the choice of seal type may be limited as well.
