3.1 Pinning
One of the simplest and cheapest forms of connection used for transmitting both axial loads and torque. Various types of pin are used including straight round, tapered round, tubular spring and grooved pins. In the more common method, illustrated as Figure 1,the pin is perpendicular to the shaft axis and fixes the hub axially on the shaft.
In another method the hub is held axially by a secondary device, which is often a circlip. The pin can be designed to shear if the hub is overloaded thus protecting the major and more expensive components from damage. Because of the stress raising effect it can only be used to transmit relatively low torque. In addition, fretting corrosion and cracking can occur and poor fits cause backlash, particularly during rapid stops. Stress concentration effects vary between a kf of 1.4 and 3.
