3.2 Grub screw
With the hub extended, a hole is threaded and a grub screw tightened onto the shaft. This is often used with small gears, but the screw can work loose, and only light torque can be transmitted. Local flats or dimples are often machined on the shaft so that damage to the shaft caused by over-tightening of the screws does not prevent subsequent removal of the hub. This flat also has the benefit of fixing the angular orientation of the hub. In many applications two grub screws are used.
