3.5 Shrink Fit
This involves manufacturing a larger diameter shaft than hole in the bore of the hub. In order to assemble the connection the hub is heated and occasionally the shaft is cooled. After assembly, an interference fit exists and such a fit can transmit much greater torque than a press fit. Care must be exercised not to cause over-strain of the components due to a larger than required interference fit. Disassembly is possible but requires specialised equipment for heating and cooling. Hence, shrink fits are regarded as permanent. Stress concentration effects are approximately the same as for press fit.
