Commercial considerations include the price of the connector, the speed of installation and level of machining required on both the shaft and hub. Costing of the connection cannot be considered in isolation from the complete system. For example, if a keyway is cut into a shaft this weakens it and a larger diameter shaft is required to compensate for this. The friction connections described can be employed with comparatively smaller diameter shafts and smaller associated components, such as bearings. Hence estimating the overall cost implications of a particular connection is not simple.
Also important is the relationship of the connection to the quality of the entire system, the availability of the particular connection type and size from more than one supplier and the desirability of standardisation throughout a product range.
