6.1 Shaft Size
The starting point for any evaluation of connection type is to calculate the minimum shaft diameter necessary to transmit the torque. These calculations (see Shafts for Strength and Rigidity, and Shafts with Fluctuating Loads) indicate that a shaft of non-standard size will be appropriate. Select the next size up from the list of preferred nominal bores of bushes and shaft diameters: -

5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 90 and 100mm

Sizes in between these can be used if the application demands.An increased cost will probably be incurred due to the low manufacturing and stock levels of non-preferred sizes of both shafts and associated components.
