7. Select the type of connection
There is no unique approach to selecting connections from a manufacturer's catalogue. Because requirements differ, different factors are emphasised. In most cases , the desired torque capacity and speed are known. The requirement is then to identify catalogue items, which are acceptable in terms of strength, size, cost and availability.

For practical reasons, connection catalogues tend to display only geometric and materials data of stock items rather than specific operational information. This is because functional behaviour will vary with an application and so it may not be feasible to give comprehensive data covering all operational conditions within a catalogue for a complete product range. The designer should exercise professional care in the selection and application of connectors irrespective of the contents of this guide.

The strategy proposed is to use this chart so that the number of types from which to select a connection is reduced. The result of applying this strategy to a sample problem is illustrated in the example.
